TENNIS ELBOW INJURY

Tennis elbow is a condition where the outer part of the elbow becomes sore and tender. Tennis elbow injury is an overuse injury occurring in the lateral side of the elbow region, but more specifically it occurs at the common extensor tendon that originates from then lateral epicondyle.

Patients with tennis elbow usually present with pain, inflammation, redness and tenderness at the lateral side of elbow.  Pain upon extending the wrist and hand is also present. Stretching the involved extensor muscles may also cause pain as these muscles can be in a contracted state due to overuse.

Tennis Elbow Treatment: The Options

Evidence suggests that joint mobilisation with movement directed at the elbow resulted in reduction in pain and improved function.  Positive results have also been found with manual therapy using manipulation directed at the cervical spine.

Extra Corporeal ShockWave Therapy (ECSWT) is known as very effective treatment for tennis elbow in a way that generates  the high pressured acoustic shock waves that travel through the skin to break down calcified tissue and stimulate tissue repair.  Coupled with Ultrasound waves, the regaling effect is sped up.

Low level laser therapy administered at specific doses and wavelengths directly to the elbow tendon insertions offers short-term pain relief and less disability, both alone and in conjunction with an exercise regimen.

Our clinic also utilises electro-therapeutic modalities such as Interferential and therapeutic Ultrasound which we have found to be very effective as a tennis elbow treatment option.

Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be recommended in order to decrease inflammation and enhance the recovery process.
